Robert Johnson, a Canadian Depth Psychologist has written my three favourite books about romantic love “She, He and We – the psychology of romantic love”. They are not novels but rather instructional books that tell us, through ancient myths and symbols about the psyche of love from the perspective of he, she and us.

Humans are yet to discover what the real secrets are to a happy and successful relationship. But with astounding clarity, one thing rings true – there are three parts in every relationship – each component is of equal importance. Love of the self, love of the other and love for the union.

The modern notion of a relationship is “What can I get”, not “What can I give”. I hear this all too often from people who are desperate to find beauty and meaning in their lives, to find the other who will complement me, make me complete. What we don’t realise is that we are already complete. We make endless lists about what we want to find in a partner. Perhaps we should start with a list of what we want to find in ourselves.
